How much of what we do throughout each and every day is centered around self fulfillment? Think about it! Even the simple task of eating is purely selfish. I know thats a little extreme. But it serves only as a way to get the wheels turning. As humans, and more specifically as Americans most everything we do every single day is self centered.
I've always got a kick out of those little quotes you see on daily calendars and Facebook posts, the ones that are thought provoking yet really simple and obvious at the same time. I.e. "if you don't control your anger your, your anger will control you" I know that's a silly one. But her is one simple yet powerful one I've always had to remind my self of on a regular basis "The smallest good deed is better than the grandest intentions." imagine if we could apply that to our lives even once a day. Imagine the positive impact we could have on others lives. Try to envision our world as it is now, and our world if one third of the population acted on this simple premise.
Now don't get me wrong, it's not to say people aren't doing this every day. Just not enough of us, namely me. There are people who devote their very existence to the help and support of others. Most of which go unnoticed by the general public. And they probably want it that way. I think that charity is no longer charity when you start committing it out of the hope you will be noticed or praised for it.
So the challenge here for me....and the reader is; take action! Take one of those grand intentions you had today, or hell even one from your new years resolutions and act on it! Take your thoughts and create actions for the greater good of someone other than your self. Call that old friend you have been thinking about, bring dinner to a shut in who isn't capable of doing it for themselves regularly, leave an anonymous donation at the door step of someone you know is struggling to make ends meet or start small and write someone a thank you note for that smallest good deed they did for you. I promise it will change the course of their day and quite possibly your week. And yes, the feeling you get when you do for others is self fulfilling too, but I believe it was designed that way! So we would REPEAT IT!
